What is internal medicine?
Services
Continued
If your pet has a problem requiring advanced diagnostics or treatment, ask your family veterinarian if referral to an internal medicine specialist is appropriate. Although the majority of our clients are referred to us by a family veterinarian, referrals are not required. Becoming a specialist in small animal internal medicine requires four years of additional training following veterinary school. Passing rigorous testing requirements is then required to become a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Some of the types of cases referred to internal medicine specialists include the following:
• Gastrointestinal diseases
• Endocrine disorders (diabetes, thyroid disease)
• Upper and lower airway disease
• Renal (kidney) disease
• Infectious and immune-mediated diseases
• Pancreatic and hepatic (liver) disorders
• Special services:
• blood and plasma transfusions
• oxygen therapy
• ultrasonography and echocardiography
• endoscopy
• 24 hour intensive care
